Trek

Hey guys! I'm just gonna go outside for a little walky walk.

I'll be back in a month.

My housemates and I are leaving on Saturday for a three week long trek through the Himalayas. I probably would have just gone missing for 3 weeks and told you all about it when we got back, but my friend, Niki, told me that I should give you people more notice about these things.

Here are the deets:

We will

  • walk for 22 days
  • avoid leeches with all of our hearts
  • experience life in Nepal outside of the Kathmandu Valley
  • momentarily jump the border into Tibet
  • climb up to 16,847 feet
  • cry because it is so beautiful
  • praise God when it is over and I don't have to walk uphill anymore.

I'm so excited and I can't wait to tell you more about it when we return!

Tuesday Photos

No photos today! I have a video for you instead.

I'm not really sure what I was trying to do with the camera, but Sundesh is asking me if he can take a picture of me. I love his cute little voice!

Finding the Asmitas

Hello world. Please pay attention.

Yesterday morning I was spying on my neighbors (like normal) from my bedroom window. As I pulled the curtains back, I saw an extra kid outside and the back of his head looked strangely familiar. He was wearing taekwondo clothes (an outfit? uniform? what do you call those?) and I only know one boy who wears taekwondo clothes.

It was Alay!

Alay is the Asmitas' brother!

I ran downstairs with my feet halfway hanging out of my jellies and swung open our noisy gate.

He heard the gate and turned around. "Deeeeeeeeepa!" he cried, with arms wide open.

My heart flooded with love and comfort.

We both ran across the street towards each other without even looking both ways. When I had finished squeezing him and spinning him and hugging him, I bombarded him with questions. "Where do you live now?" "How are you?" "Can I come to your house?"

He looked up at me with a big toothless smile and said, "Yes, come."

So there you have it. Here begins my mission to find the Asmitas... coming soon to a weekend near you.

August learnings

This is what I learned last month. Among other things...

1. If you wear a high ponytail in your hair while wearing a scooter helmet, you will get a headache from the pony tail holder thing poking you in the head.

2. When ordering food in a language in which you are not fluent, there is a high probability that you will receive something different from what you ordered. #happenedtwice

Glorious, plasticy wonderfulness.

3. It is dirt hard to wait on God.

4. Jellies are back. And they rock! (I was forced to get a pair downtown the other day when my shoe broke. Best. rupees. I've. Ever. Spent.)

5. Viewing Niel Armstrong walk on the moon would have been impossible if it weren't for The Dish. Also? Australians don't like root beer (generally speaking, of course).

6. Olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and honey. I never knew. My salads will never be the same.

7. Sundesh can spell elepantboy, bicycle, and chicken killer all by himself in English
Watermelon is still a challenge.

8. I have a sanguine temperament. This explains why I procrastinate, why I like smells, and why I have bright green curtains.
